HotBot News Channel Review

HotBot News may be defunct as of Sept. 2000. It is no longer linked from the HotBot page, while the Lycos news search is.

  • Dates: Up to past month, can choose less
  • Sources: 20 listed on their source page as of 9/15/00.
  • Sort: Relevance or date
  • Frequency: Formerly, every 30 minutes, but on 9/15/00, the most recent story was from 8/24/00
  • Case Recognition: No longer appears to be supported
  • Stop Words: Many, including numbers and common words
  • Truncation: As in other HotBot searching, the asterisk * is the truncation symbol. It must be preceded by at least two characters. Unlike in regular HotBot, it can only be and end truncation symbol, not internal.
  • Boolean: Phrase searching is the default. It does support AND, OR, and nesting. The Boolean operators can be in upper or lower case. Neither NOT nor AND NOT worked. The + - system is ignored.
  • Phrase: The default. If a phrase is entered with double quotes, it also is processed as a phrase.
